Star footballer Neymar was fined 16 million reais ($3.33 million) by Brazilian authorities for violating environmental rules during the construction of his coastal mansion in southeastern part of the country.
The project breached rules regarding the use and movement of freshwater sources, rock and sand, local authorities first alleged late last month and confirmed on Monday.
Neymar’s spokesperson declined to comment on the issue.
Neymar’s residence is located in the town of Mangaratiba on the southern coast in Rio de Janeiro.
Mangaratiba's environmental body said that “the construction of an artificial lake at the mansion” led to environmental infractions.
The statement added that "dozens of infractions" were detected while adding that Neymar is "carrying out work subject to environmental control without authorization” and has overseen the "removal of land and suppression of vegetation without authorization”.
The case will also be probed by the local attorney general's office, the state civil police and environmental protection office along with other environmental control bodies.
Neymar plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain and is considered one of the best footballers in the world.
He has made 173 appearances across competitions for PSG, scoring 118 goals and providing 77 assists.
According to Squawka, Neymar was directly involved in more non-penalty goals, 1.28, per 90 than any other player in Europe's top seven leagues in 2022/23.
Neymar previously made 186 appearances for Barcelona before leaving the club in 2017 for PSG. He scored 105 goals and provided 76 assists during his time with the Catalan club.
